Course description

This workshop will review the research methods and concepts that led to the development of the SMART method and will offer a light introduction to Relational Frame Theory, sufficient to understand and use the method. The relevance of relational skills to a host of educational, developmental and behavioural problems will also be outlined, as well as coaching provided on how to select for and support individuals who may benefit from such interventions.

Learning Objectives

After attending this workshop, learners should be able to:

  • Describe Relational Frame Theory as a modern account of human language and cognition.

  • Illustrate how RFT is relevant to the understanding of intellectual development and educational aptitude.

  • Discuss the SMART method from classic studies using matching -to-sample table-top methods to online automated Relational Evaluation based methods (i.e. SMART)

  • Outline evidence for the benefits of the SMART method.

Dr. Sarah Cassidy

BS, PhD Psych Sc

Dr Sarah Cassidy is an Educational, Child and Adolescent Psychologist. Her work is centred on the assessment and treatment of learning and emotional/behavioural difficulties with clinical populations. She is the Founder and Director at The Smithsfield Clinic, a private practice for children, adolescents, and their families using largely ACT and RFT-based treatment methods. She has also worked as an educational psychologist within the Irish school system for the last 20 years. Sarah is co-founder of www.RaiseYourIQ.com, a part-time lecturer in Maynooth University, and an active panel member of the National Educational Psychological Service. She is also a professional member of the American Psychological Association and a chartered member of the Psychological Society of Ireland. She is a peer-reviewed ACT trainer and chairperson of the ACBS membership committee as well as being involved in various international research projects focused on using ACT and RFT interventions with young people in their schools and with their families.

FAQ

  • Who is this course suitable for?

    Anyone who is seeking to understand more about RFT and the SMART method including, but not limited to, behaviour analysts, psychologists, speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, students seeking their degree in applied behavior analysis or psychology and students seeking their BCBA® or BCaBA® certification.

  • Will I earn Continuing Education Credits?

    Yes, if you are a BCBA or BCaBA, you can receive learning (previously type-2) CEU credits.

  • How many Continuing Education Credits do I need for re-certification?

    BCBAs need 32 CEUs (of which, 4 CEUs must cover ethics for all certificants; 3 CEUs in supervision for supervisors) every 2 years. See https://www.bacb.com/maintain/continuing-education/ for more details.

  • I completed a course and have not received my completion certificate yet. Why not?

    Completion Certificates are available in your account immediately once you complete 100% of the course. You may have to download a document or answer a survey question. If you are not sure what you missed, send us an email at [email protected] and we will check for you on our end.

  • What happens if I cannot attend live?

    Don't worry! We will record the session and it will be available for you to view within 72 hours after the live event has ended.

  • How long will I have access to the recording of the live event?

    You have 3 months access to the recording. After this time you can purchase an additional 2 weeks for a fee of €10.

  • I have completed the course and received my CEU credit certificate, what now?

    To manage your CEU credits on the BACB web site after completing any of our courses, please use our ACE Provider # OP-21-0034. Reach Childrens's Services is an authorized and approved Learning Continuing Education Provider.
